Summary: With his true power, Yusuke pummels Toguro, who is excited at the prospect of this new challenge. With one Spirit Gun blast left, the two prepare for a final showdown. Toguro manages to block Yusuke’s final Spirit Gun with “100% of 100%” of his power, but dies from the strain. Yusuke is declared the winner.
Anime/manga differences after the jump.
(What's all this about? Read here)
- The episode starts with a re-do of last episode’s closing scene, as Toguro stabs Kuwabara and Yusuke finally snaps. This time around, Yukina bursts into tears, producing a shower of Hirui Stones. Nice touch. Yusuke emits a stream of energy that whirls around the stadium, and his memories of Kuwabara appear in black and white in the background.
- As Yusuke explains the difference between himself and Toguro, and remembers what Genkai told him, the anime flashes back to Genkai’s death scene. In the manga there are miniaturized images of panels from her death and elsewhere superimposed on the panel where Yusuke talks about what she told him.
- There’s more extra ringside commentary from Koto, and other standard peanut gallery filler throughout the episode. Most interestingly (for me anyway) is Sakyo thinking to himself that the moment Toguro waited for has finally come. This sets up what Sakyo says after Toguro’s death, about how Toguro sometimes seemed to just be waiting for a strong person to defeat.
- More fun with line re-assignment: in the manga random crowd members comment on Toguro’s further transformation as he reaches his “100% of 100%” form, while in the anime Koto notes this. Then when Toguro is struggling against Yusuke’s final Spirit Gun blast, in the manga random crowd guys note that Toguro’s using both hands and is purely on the defensive for the first time. In the anime Koenma and Kurama say this. On the flip-side, in the manga Chu yells at Yusuke to blow Toguro’s entire body away, while in the anime random crowd demons say this. On the other hand, after it looks like Toguro and Yusuke are both dead, a random crowd demon wonders if the match is a draw in the manga, while in the anime Koto says this. Boy, I’m really going to miss random crowd demons.
- Right before Toguro takes on Yusuke’s final Spirit Gun, in the anime his “100% of 100%” form emits waves of steam or energy or something from out of those weird nobs on his shoulders.
- As Toguro’s body shatters from the strain of using “100% of 100% “ of his power (whatever the hell that means) and he reverts to normal, the anime depicts this process as if Toguro’s “100% of 100%” form where made of glass, with his regular form underneath. This outer shell then simply breaks to pieces. The manga version is more visceral, with Toguro’s body breaking apart, with random chunks shooting off and blood spurting all over. It still kind of looks like parts of Toguro are breaking apart like glass though.
- In the manga Bui is shown reacting to Toguro’s death along with the rest of Yusuke and co.’s previous opponents; this is the last we ever see of him. We also see Ichigaki’s former fighters, and this is the last time we see any of them in the manga either. The anime doesn’t show any of them reacting to Toguro’s death. We also see Suzuki react, which is likewise left out of the anime.
