Episode 83

EPISODE 83
残された手段!蔵馬の決断 (Nokosareta Shudan! Kurama no Ketsudan)
The Remaining Measure! Kurama’s Resolve
First Broadcast: June 4, 1994
Equivalent Manga Chapter(s): chapter 136 (WSJ #41, 1993, September 27), first half of chapter 137 (WSJ #42, 1993, October 4)
Summary: Kurama realizes Amanuma is just being manipulated by Sensui, and doesn’t understand the true fearsomeness of his own abilities.  These abilities faithfully bring to life the rules of the video game, meaning that while Yusuke and co. can continue as many times as they want even if they lose, and will only die if they give up, Amanuma will die if defeated even once.  But with the world on the line, Kurama has no choice but to defeat Amanuma anyway. With Amanuma dead, the gang moves on deeper into the cave.  Outside the cave, Koenma arrives and heads inside to join the group, while Yusuke and co. finally reach Sensui’s group at the portal.

Anime/manga differences after the jump.

Differences from the Manga
(What's all this about?  Read here)
  • At the start of chapter 136 Yanagisawa says they’ve already spent 3 hours playing games against Amanuma.  This gets left out in the anime.
  • Also at the start of the chapter, Hiei explains that he tried producing flames but they wouldn’t come out, so Amanuma’s Territory must prevent any fighting just like Kaito’s did, meaning they’ got no choice but to win at the games.  The anime had filler last episode of Hiei using his sword to try and destroy the game only for it to not work, so in this episode Hiei references that event instead of him trying to produce flames.
  • During the flashback to how Amanuma met Sensui, in the anime Sensui seems to slip into his “Kazuya” voice when telling Amanuma about how he can get back at his stupid parents, teachers, friends, etc.  The anime also has a creepy image of Sensui as a winged, feathered angel wrapping around Amanuma.
  • Once Amanuma loses and dies, in the manga his Territory Game World instantly vanishes, while in the anime it violently collapses.  Then there’s a filler scene of Kuwabara with Sensui and co. in the cave’s center.  They can hear Amanuma’s Territory collapsing and realize he’s lost.  Kuwabara shouts that it’s all over for Sensui, so Sensui has Gourmet keep him quiet by tying a bib around his mouth.  After that the scene returns to Yusuke and co.
  • There’s a little more dialogue in the anime version of the scene with the dead Amanuma.  The group sees the game console on the ground and comments on how a tiny thing like that was what Amanuma created his huge Game World from.  Genkai, Kaito, and Yanagisawa head outside, with Kaito carrying Amanuma’s body.
  • Chapter 137 begins with the narrator explaining that just as regular people in Mushiyori City didn’t realize the town was being flooded with demon bugs and other monsters, they also didn’t notice when all these creatures suddenly vanished, as if to signify the calm before the storm.  This is said over an image of Mushiyori City, and there’s some dialogue boxes of a news report or something saying that the thunder warnings for the city have been cancelled, and also that there’s no trace of Kamiya.  The anime includes the narration, and it leads into a scene of Shizuru and Keiko getting out of a taxi in Mushiyori City.  The bulletin about the thunderstorm warning is heard on the cab radio.  Shizuru tells Keiko that the creatures previously crawling all over the city have vanished, which Keiko thinks must mean Yusuke and co. have defeated Sensui.  Shizuru says that’d be nice if true, but she has an ominous feeling, like something even worse is coming.  She looks at her cigarette lighter (which looks like the one Sakyo gave her) and walks off.  Keiko follows her, while the TV in the store window behind her shows a news report on how Kamiya escaped from a Tokyo jail several days ago, and there’s still no sign of him.
  • After Koenma meets up with Botan and heads into the Irima Cave, we rejoin Yusuke and co. deep inside the cave.  In the manga the narrator explains that this scene is an hour and a half after Koenma entered the cave, which is left out in the anime.  The narrator also explains that after Amanuma’s defeat, Yusuke and co. left behind Genkai, Yanagisawa, and Kaito.  This was actually shown earlier in the anime, so there’s no need to have the narrator explain it.
  • Once Yusuke and co. reach the center of the cave where Sensui is, in the anime Sensui gives a big speech about how they’re lucky to be here for such a historic moment and whatnot…assuming of course that they can survive long enough for the portal to open.  This speech closes the episode.
  • The episode ends 10 pages into chapter 137, as Yusuke and co. reach Sensui.
