Summary: Back in the Human World, Kuwabara learns the outcome of the tournament from Kurama.  They meet up with Shizuru and Keiko and head for Genkai’s temple.  With the Demon World now maintaining a peaceful relationship with the Human World under Enki’s rule, the barrier between the two worlds has been taken down.  Hiei is still with Mukuro and her servants, helping save humans who are accidentally sucked into the Demon World now that the inter-world barrier has been removed; he says he’ll return to the Human World when he feels like it.  Kuwabara and co. reach the temple, where Genkai explains that after she dies, they will all inherit her massive estate, which she wants turned into a habitat for demons as they become increasingly common in the Human World.  The gang heads for the beach, where Yusuke suddenly returns.  He and Keiko share a kiss before getting soaked by a huge wave.  Fini.

Summary: Yusuke and Yomi continue their fight, which ends in a huge explosion.  Yusuke wakes up a week later in the hospital, and learns that he lost to Yomi.  But Yomi was in turn defeated by Koko (one of Raizen’s old friends), due to having used up much of his stamina fighting Yusuke.  The tournament was ultimately won by Enki, Koko’s husband and yet another friend of Raizen, and Yusuke is just in time to see his victory speech.  Enki says that as ruler of the Demon World he wants to ensure peace with the Human World.  The tournament over, everything winds down.  Kurama heads back to the Human World, while Yusuke has to take care of some lose ends before he can do the same.

Summary: Mukuro and Natsume have a close fight, as do 2 other of Raizen’s friends, Shu and Soketsu.  Meanwhile, Yusuke begins to fight Yomi.  Discouraged at first, a vision of Raizen helps him regain his determination.  He manages to break through Yomi’s force field technique, and the two begin pummeling each other at close range.

Summary: Hiei goes up against Mukuro in the tournament.  Mukuro began her life as a prisoner, and even now retains shackles on her arms.  Outmatched by Mukuro’s power (including her ability to cut space itself) Hiei fires his Koku-Ryu-Ha, which she manages to completely destroy.  However, the attack breaks her shackles.  Though Hiei has lost, he and Mukuro both seem more at peace with their past.

Summary: Kurama fights Shigure and is initially overwhelmed, but shifts into his Yoko form in the nick of time.  However, Kurama decides to settle things in his human form, and narrowly wins by using his plant-manipulating powers to take control of the gigantic tree that serves as their fighting arena.  Shamed, Shigure jumps to his death.

Summary: With the main tournament in full swing, Shishi-Wakamaru loses to Hokushin.  Jin goes up against Soketsu, while Toya fights Kujo.  The two put up a heroic struggle but are no match for Soketsu and Kujo, who are really two of Raizen’s old friends and therefore extraordinarily powerful.

Summary: The Demon World Unification Tournament begins.  Everyone who’s anyone enters, including all of Raizen’s old friends.  Yomi must fight Shura in the preliminaries, while Chu has the misfortunate of going up against Raizen’s friend Natsume.  Natsume easily beats Chu, but he falls in love with her.

Summary: Yusuke proposes to Yomi a simple tournament to decide who will rule the Demon World.  Kurama and co. threaten to mutiny if Yomi doesn’t go along with this idea, and even Mukuro (who has snuck into Gandara) accepts the proposal, leaving Yomi no choice.  Yomi uses his advanced technology to create a powerful son, Shura, to help him win the tournament.  Meanwhile, Raizen’s old friends come to pay their respects.  They want to enter the tournament too and show off their power.  In truth each one is on par with Yomi, and together they create a massive surge of energy felt throughout the Demon World.  Yomi and the embryonic Shura sense this, and Yomi realizes there have been powerful people out there living quietly and without ambition, something he never calculated on.  Moved, he decides to abandon his strategies and fight in the tournament as a single man.

Summary: Yusuke has vastly powered up, and can now easily defeat Hokushin and the rest of Raizen’s followers.  He goes to take on Raizen again, but Raizen has gone mad from hunger and attacks him.  After subduing Raizen (who’s getting constantly weaker) Yusuke demands that he explain why he stopped eating humans.  The truth is that 700 years ago Raizen met and fell in love with a “Kuda-Kusushi” woman, an ancient kind of doctor, and vowed not to eat until he met her again.  However, she died giving birth to their child (Yusuke’s ancestor), and he hasn’t eaten since.  After explaining this and his views on the relationship between the three worlds, Raizen finally dies.  Yusuke and Hokushin set off the see Yomi.

Summary: Kurama returns to the Human World, saying he has a plain to raise six powerful warriors for Yomi.  To keep him in line, Yomi’s right-hand man Shachi sends a demon to possess Kurama’s new step-brother and keep him hostage.  Kurama is actually having Genkai train some of the fighters Yusuke and co. defeated in the Dark Tournament: Chu, Rinku, Jin, Toya, Suzuki, and Shishi-Wakamaru.  In a year’s time they all grow as powerful as Kurama promised.  Impressed, Yomi gives Kurama Shachi’s job.  Enraged, Shachi ambushes Kurama later.  Turning Yoko, Kurama kills him easily.

Summary: : Kurama goes to the Demon World himself to Yomi’s city Gandara, where he takes part in Yomi’s war council.  Yomi was once Kurama’s subordinate, but after being blinded by an assassin he heightened his remaining senses to the extreme and grew in power until his influence in the Demon World rivaled Raizen and Mukuro.  Yomi has captured the assassin who blinded him so long ago, and forces Kurama to see him.  In reality it was Kurama who hired the assassin to kill Yomi, after getting fed up by Yomi’s reckless actions.  Yomi threatens to kill Kurama’s mother and new step-father if he doesn’t help him with his plans to unify the Demon World.

Summary: Everyone gathers at Genkai’s temple, where the Spirit World Special Defense Squad opens a portal for Yusuke to travel to the Demon World.  Kurama and Hiei announce their intention to join up with Yomi and Mukuro, the Demon World’s two other major powers.  Five days later, Yusuke reaches Raizen’s country and finally meets his “true” father, who he attacks for meddling in his fight with Sensui.  However, despite being on the verge of death, Raizen is still so powerful that Yusuke can’t even budge him from his throne.

Summary: Hokushin explains that while he wants to give up human flesh like Raizen, he also needs strength to fight Raizen’s enemies.  He tells Yusuke to think over whether to come to the Demon World or not, then leaves.  Kuroko has watched the whole fight, and she advises Yusuke to go to the Demon World.  An envoy from the Spirit World had tasked her with killing Yusuke, and while she refused, seeing Yusuke calmly discussing the matter of eating humans with Hokushin has profoundly disturbed her.  Meanwhile, Kurama and Hiei are themselves approached by headhunters from the other two kings, Yomi and Mukuro, asking for their help in the coming war.  Yusuke breaks the news to Keiko that he’ll be leaving for three years, and asks her to marry him when he returns, but she dumps him instead.

Summary: The visitors say Yusuke’s “true” father, Raizen, is one of three kings who keep the Demon World in political balance.  Though Raizen can only survive on human flesh, he gave up eating humans hundreds of years ago and has been slowly dying of hunger ever since.  His death now imminent, he wants Yusuke to come help his country in the war which will envelop the Demon World once he’s gone.  Yusuke is unconvinced by the visitors’ story though, and fights the group’s leader, Hokushin, who defeats him with a psychological trick.  Still unconvinced, Yusuke can tell that Hokushin has recently eaten human flesh, despite supposedly following Raizen’s example in abstaining from it.  He punches Hokushin and asks him to explain himself.

Summary: Yusuke and the gang return home.  Exiting Irima Cave, they reunite with Genkai and co., who have been anxiously waiting for them.  The Special Defense Squad threatens Koenma for his disobedience, but Yusuke scares them off and they go back to sealing up the portal.  The case is closed.  Everyone lives more or less happily ever after (even Amanuma was resurrected by Koenma), save for Yusuke, who feels lost and unable to fit back in to everyday life.

Summary: In his new form Yusuke is in full control of his power, but seems possessed by a foreign intelligence.  He easily (but unconsciously) defeats Sensui, firing a massive Spirit Gun blast to finish the job.  Regaining his senses, Yusuke begs Sensui to survive and get better so that they can fight a proper rematch.  Itsuki suddenly appears and explains that Sensui has a fatal illness and never had more than half a month left to live anyway.  Sensui’s true motive was simply to come to the Demon World before he died.  Mortally wounded from Yusuke’s Spirit Gun, Sensui dies and Itsuki takes his body, vanishing into another dimension.  Yusuke figures that the being who triggered his transformation and possessed him must be his demonic ancestor.  Dissatisfied that his duel with Sensui was interrupted in this way, he considers staying in the Demon World to track his ancestor down, but ultimately opts to return to the Human World.

Summary: With Yusuke there again, the group regains their spirits.  Yusuke starts his rematch with Sensui, much stronger now, and pierces Sensui’s spirit armor with his Spirit Gun.  The pair’s evenly matched battle ravages the landscape, but Yusuke is unable to properly control his new power.  Hearing a strange voice, Yusuke begins to more fully awaken as a demon, gaining long hair and strange markings all over his body.

Summary: The Spirit World Special Defense Squad arrives and gets to work sealing the portal back up.  They reveal to Koenma that Yusuke is a demon’s descendent and will soon be reborn as a demon himself.  As the squad prepares to execute Yusule, Puu (now a huge bird creature) shields Yusuke from their attacks.  Yusuke is reborn, and he terrifies the squad with his new S-class power.  He and Koenma set off on Puu for the Demon World, where they join up with Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara just as Sensui was about to finish them off.

Summary: As demons start to stream out from the newly opened portal, Hiei, Kurama (now in his Yoko form), and Kuwabara confront Sensui between dimensions.  Yusuke’s death has indeed triggered a power-up in the group, and Hiei and Kurama are now too strong to pass through the barrier between the Human and Demon Worlds, which blocks all demons with A-class power or higher.  Sensui is on the other side (his sacred power allows him to pass right through), and to reach him Kuwabara uses his Dimensional Sword to cut through the barrier.  In the afterlife, King Enma dispatches his strongest warriors, the Spirit World Special Defense Squad, to deal with the situation. Hiei and co. reach the Demon World and begin to fight Sensui, but are absolutely no match.  Meanwhile, Shizuru and Keiko notice something odd is happening to Puu.

Summary: Still claiming to be on the brink of something new, Yusuke continues to fight Sensui with seemingly suicidal determination.  Frightened and enraged, Kuwabara uses his Dimensional Sword to escape from Itsuki, but the group arrives too late: Sensui has killed Yusuke.  The portal finally cracks open, and Sensui assures them all that the real finale is just getting started.

Summary: It turns out that as Shinobu, Sensui wields “Sekoki”, sacred light energy not even Genkai was able to master.  He attacks Yusuke with this unthinkable power, which Hiei declares to be on par with that of an S-class demon.  Koenma finally fires the Mafukan, but Sensui deflects it.  Yusuke still wants to fight and says he’s on the verge of “something”.  Watching the fight, Kurama suspects Yusuke is trying to use his own death as a catalyst to power them all up, the same way Kuwabara’s (supposed) death gave Yusuke the strength to defeat Toguro.

Summary: Koenma plans to close the portal with the “Mafukan”, a powerful sealing technique he’s spent centuries storing energy for, sacrificing himself and Sensui in the process. Yusuke stops him at the last moment and beats “Kazuya”, causing Sensui’s “Shinobu” personality to finally emerge.  Being the central personality, Shinobu is vastly stronger than the others and easily outclasses Yusuke.  When Yusuke stubbornly declares he’ll still win, Shinobu starts laughing uncontrollably, emitting even more powerful energy.

Yusuke’s Tough Battle! A Decisive Difference

Summary: Sensui reveals two more reasons Yusuke can’t defeat him.  First is that Yusuke is weak against attacks that come from many different directions at once, while Sensui specializes in them due to constantly fighting multiple opponents.  Most important of all though is that Sensui has ten times the amount of spiritual energy as Yusuke, allowing him to constantly fire powerful spiritual attacks.  Still not impressed, Yusuke pummels Sensui with a surprise attack.  Sensui, who really has seven different personalities, suddenly switches over to his “Kazuya” personality and catches Yusuke off-guard (Yusuke has previously been fighting Sensui’s “Minoru” personality).  Just as “Kazuya” is about to finish Yusuke off, Koenma arrives on the scene.

Spirit World Detectives—A Fated One-on-One Battle

Summary: The group (sans Yusuke) is swallowed by Itsuki’s pet extra-dimensional demon, the Ura-Otoko, leaving Yusuke and Sensui to fight one-on-one. Itsuki explains his history with Sensui to Kuwabara and the others.  As the fight begins, Sensui says that while Yusuke is physically more powerful than him, he still can’t win for several reasons, the first of which is Sensui’s superior fighting experience.  Unimpressed, Yusuke knocks Sensui into a nearby lake inside the cave.  Sensui soon emerges, his clothes torn up but otherwise unfazed.  It turns out Sensui’s body is covered in countless scars as a side-effect of his rigorous training.

Summary: Sensui explains that only 30 minutes remain until the portal opens.  Kurama fights “Gourmet”, who absorbs others’ abilities by eating them.  Though Kurama decapitates Gourmet in a matter of seconds, his body is really being controlled by Elder Toguro, one of his earlier meals.  After being critically injured by his brother, Elder Toguro met up with Sensui and plotted revenge against Yusuke and co., giving him the idea of the Demon World portal.  He was ultimately fed to Gourmet, but took over his body from the inside.  Still furious over having to kill Amanuma, Kurama beats Elder Toguro with a parasitic tree that imprisons him in a world of illusion.

Summary: Kurama realizes Amanuma is just being manipulated by Sensui, and doesn’t understand the true fearsomeness of his own abilities.  These abilities faithfully bring to life the rules of the video game, meaning that while Yusuke and co. can continue as many times as they want even if they lose, and will only die if they give up, Amanuma will die if defeated even once.  But with the world on the line, Kurama has no choice but to defeat Amanuma anyway. With Amanuma dead, the gang moves on deeper into the cave.  Outside the cave, Koenma arrives and heads inside to join the group, while Yusuke and co. finally reach Sensui’s group at the portal.

Meanwhile, Sensui’s partner Itsuki says his portal will open in 2 hours.

The two join Genkai and co. at the mouth of Irima Cave, the site of the portal and Sensui’s hideout.

Summary: It turns out Sensui has not only mastered Resshu-ken, supposedly the strongest form of martial arts, but he’s even improved it by combining it with his spiritual powers to create a unique fighting style, “Reiko Resshu-ken”.  Yusuke is soon overwhelmed, and even Kuwabara and Kurama joining the fight doesn’t help much.  Sensui and his comrades cleverly split the three up, with “Gourmet” and “Game Master” kidnapping Kuwabara.  The gang flees via truck with Kuwabara in tow, and Sensui easily counters Yusuke’s Spirit Gun, forcing him to pursue on bike.

Summary: Desperate to save his friends, Kuwabara’s spiritual powers suddenly return and he gains the Dimensional Sword ability, defeating Seaman.  Seaman realizes that Kuwabara is the kind of person their group has been searching for, someone capable of cutting down the barrier preventing truly powerful demons from crossing over to the Human World.  Kuwabara spares Seaman’s life, taking him back to Yusuke’s apartment, where his injuries are treated.  Under questioning, Seaman reveals that he supports this plot to destroy the Human World due to having his view of humanity warped by watching the “Black Chapter”, a secret Spirit World video documenting the worse aspects of human nature.  This confirms for Koenma the ringleader’s identity: formal Spirit World Detective Shinobu Sensui, who vanished ten years ago after stealing the Black Chapter tape.

Summary: Some time later, Botan catches up with Yusuke and Kuwabara, and gives them a message from Koenma saying that the portal will open over a week sooner than expected.  At this critical time Kuwabara decides to attend a concert, much to Yusuke and Botan’s disgust, but there he is attacked by another of the 7, “Seaman” (Kiyoshi Mitarai).  Seaman can create liquid monsters by mixing his own blood with water.  He has one of these monsters take Kuwabara’s friends hostage, while another attacks Kuwabara, who is helpless since his spiritual powers apparently disappeared after the Dark Tournament.

Summary: “Doctor”, one of the seven opening the portal, actually works at the hospital and begins attacking Yusuke and the gang with disease bugs.  Asato Kido (one of Yusuke’s former abductors) learns Doctor’s identity, and though paralyzed by Doctor his shadow-based abilities allow him to warn Yusuke just in time.  Yusuke begins fighting Doctor (Minoru Kamiya), who in addition to creating virus bugs also has hands which can cut human skin as easily as a scalpel, with which he has surgically enhanced his own body to give him further superhuman abilities.  Yusuke blows Doctor’s arm off, but he uses his surgical powers to quickly reattach it.

Summary: Yusuke and co. start investigating Mushiyori City, and split into two groups.  Kurama’s group investigates the center of the portal-opening and finds only an empty field; the true center must be underground.  Meanwhile, Yusuke’s group discovers someone else with an ability: the mind-reader Murota.  They use him to search for the group opening the portal. He seems to find the ringleader, but is apparently shot by someone.  At the hospital, Murota explains what he read in the ringleader’s mind: a group of 7 is behind the plot, and they want to kill everyone in the world.  Nearby, one of those 7 is watching...

Summary: The Demon World portal is in nearby Mushiyori City, and will fully open in 3 weeks. Koenma explains that if it does then demons of Toguro’s caliber (B-class) will be able to freely enter the Human World.  A special barrier prevents even stronger demons (A and S-class) from entering even if the portal opens, but if this final barrier is destroyed it will mean the end of the Human World, as even the Spirit World can’t stop S-class demons.  Hiei leaves the others, vowing to return to the Demon World, and the group decides to rest and plan their next move.
